Turkish Towels vs Terry Towels: Which Should You Buy?

By TowelSoft · 8 min read · Updated Jan 2026

If you've ever stood in a store (or a browser tab) trying to decide between a flat, stylish Turkish towel and a thick, fluffy terry towel, you're not alone. They're built differently, behave differently, and shine in different situations. Here's an honest breakdown so you can match the towel to how you'll actually use it.

The core difference: weave

Terry towels have looped pile on both sides — those tiny loops create surface area that traps water, giving terry its plush feel and high absorbency. Turkish towels (often called peshtemal or hammam towels) are flat-woven from long-staple Turkish cotton, with little or no pile. That makes them thinner, lighter, and faster-drying.

Absorbency

Terry wins on raw absorbency per pass — it's why classic bath towels and hotel towels are terry. Turkish towels still absorb well and actually get more absorbent after a few washes as the cotton blooms, but they hold less water at any one moment. For drying off a big swimmer or a long shower, terry feels more substantial.

Drying speed & freshness

This is Turkish cotton's home turf. Because the weave is flat and light, Turkish towels dry far faster — on a hook, in a gym bag, or on a beach chair. Faster drying also means less mildew smell, which matters for travel, boats, and humid bathrooms.

Honest note from TowelSoft: We don't market thick plush towels as "quick-dry." If fast drying, light weight, and packability are your priorities, a Turkish towel is the better tool. If you want a cushioned, spa-plush feel, choose terry.

Weight, packing & travel

Turkish towels fold down small and weigh a fraction of a plush bath sheet, making them excellent for travel, the gym, hiking, and the beach — where they also shed sand with a quick shake. Terry is bulkier but feels more luxurious at home.

Style & versatility

Turkish towels double as throws, picnic blankets, scarves, and cover-ups, and they look great with stripes and tassels. Terry is the cozy classic for everyday bathrooms and guest sets.

So which should you buy?

Buy Turkish if you want light, quick-dry, packable, sand-shedding towels for the beach, travel, or the gym. Buy terry if you want a plush, highly absorbent everyday bath towel. Many California homes keep both — terry for the bathroom, Turkish for the beach bag. Not sure on weight? Read our companion guide on what GSM means.
